Preventing Osteoporosis through a Proper Diet

SONY DSCDiet and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease which thins bone density, leading to weaker bones and a higher risk of herniated disks, which can causes back problems such as Sciatica. Osteoporosis can be very tough to endure, as there is no proper cure for it besides chiropractic, and even then some patients may not respond positively due to the damage done. Therefore, chiropractors advise that a proper diet should be followed, as it can improve bone and muscle density, consequently reducing the chances of Osteoporosis.

The Proper Diet

There are some nutrients in the diet that can help you improve the quality of your bone structure. Vitamin D for example, found in flaxseed and fish oil, strengthens your bones and makes them less susceptible to diseases. However, other substances present in food, such as phytates, can reduce your body’s ability to absorb calcium. Here are some examples of foods that can affect bone health.

High Sodium Foods

Food items high in sodium can cause your body to lose calcium, which is essential in maintaining bone health. This can lead to weakening of bones, eventually resulting in bone diseases such as osteoporosis. Processed foods usually contain a high amount of sodium, so look for their nutritional values and avoid them if they have a high percentage of salt.

Legumes

Although it is true that beans and legumes contain a high amount of calcium, they also contain magnesium and phytates. You can reduce the amount of phytate by boiling the beans before the cooking them.

Wheat bran

Just like beans, wheat bran also contains a high amount of phytates, which reduce calcium absorption.

Caffeine

Similar to phytates, caffeine also interfere with the body’s absorption of calcium. The consumption of caffeine drinks such as tea, coffee or sodas should be moderated, if not completely avoided.

Alcohol

Research suggests that alcohol, among other health problems such as liver disease, can also contribute to loss in bone density.

Spinach

Spinach, though a very healthy source for other nutrients, shouldn’t be counted as a sole source for calcium as they contain oxalates, which doesn’t allow the body to absorb the calcium effectively.

High Protein foods

We all know Protein is good for our health, but too much protein in our diets can also cause our bodies to lose calcium. Eat meat and other high protein foods in moderation.

You may also contact a chiropractor who could recommend you nutritional supplements if you are lacking any of the basic nutrients required in the daily diet.

Types of Back pain

Posterior_view_of_lumbar_region_for_electrostimulation_electrode_placementAs any good chiropractor would tell you, there is no single cause of back pain. This is because back pain can occur due to various reasons, and affect different areas. It is important that you have an understanding of the nature of your ailment before going to the chiropractor for treatment.

Location Of The Pain

Back pain is classified in two categories, depending on where the pain occurs.

Upper Back Pain

Pain in the upper back, shoulders or neck is termed as upper back pain. There can be certain causes of upper back pain, such as stretched tendons or damaged ligaments due to strenuous physical work. Upper back pains aren’t as common as lower back pains, and can be treated by taking pain relievers such as Paracetamol or by visiting a Chiropractor.

Lower Back Pain

Like the name suggests, lower back pains are directed at the base of the back, and occur due to the overstretching of muscles in the lower back or direct injury to that area. This pain can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as lifting something heavy or bending in an awkward position. Treatment for lower back pains is the same as for upper back pains.

Duration Of The Pain

Besides location, pain can also be classified according to duration.

Acute Back Pain

A short term pain, lasting from a few days to weeks, is called an acute back pain. There may be numerous causes of this pain, the most common being blunt trauma caused by Ankylosing spondilytis, arthritis or other medical conditions.

The symptoms of this pain can range from muscular aches and incorrect posture to shooting pains in the buttocks and back of the legs. Acute back pain can lead to serious problems, but is generally harmless, and most people tend to let it heal itself.

Chronic Back Pain

If the pain lasts for more than 3 months, it is termed as chronic back pain. The cause of chronic back pain can rarely be determined without the help of a Chiropractor or other medical professional. This long term pain gets progressively worse with time; immediate treatment is necessary to prevent further complications.

Now that you know what type of back pain you suffer from, you can act on them by looking up for home treatments online, or doing exercises which may stimulate the back. It is also recommended that you visit your nearest chiropractor who could suggest you treatment options.

Practicing Empathy

Climbing the corporate ladder seems to require traits of ruthlessness and lack of compassion or empathy for those who are stepped on or crushed on the way to the top. But it isn’t always necessary to hurt others for personal gain. Certainly, being a pushover isn’t going to get you the recognition you desire from the person set to promote someone to the next level. But neither is throwing everyone under the bus just to get what you want.

Empathy means having an understanding of what it’s like to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Atticus Finch, an attorney in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird regularly taught his children to practice empathy; to have the ability to share in and understand the emotions and feelings of other people. Having empathy is a skill you can practice by looking at this from the perspective of another person.

There are quite a few benefits to developing an empathetic side to your personality. Empathetic people are very effective communicators because they listen very closely to the words of the person they’re talking to. This also makes them a welcome addition to any kind of a group project because they find it easier to create connections with people, thereby securing greater levels of cooperation in seeing the project through to completion.

If you have been ignoring your ability to be empathetic, you may find that your relationships are suffering. Instead of coming home and finding fault with your spouse or partner for undone tasks around the house. Try to look at it from your partner’s perspective. Perhaps the project at work requires your partner to spend long hours at it, coming home after dark, making it impossible to continue the outdoor painting that had begun last weekend. Or your youngest child has been at home sick forcing the child’s mother to work from home and care for the patient all while trying to maintain some control over the household chores.

Let’s get back to the ladder climber at work. An effective manager in today’s world needs to have an excellent understanding of other people, particularly in today’s more globalized economy. A study found that managers who were able to empathize with their people had happier and much more productive employees. In this way, managers create a dream team of people who are motivated, talented, and best of all loyal to them.

The key to being empathetic at work is to find a balance between being a pushover who everyone takes advantage of and being the jerk who intends to get to the top no matter how many women and children he has to walk on to get there. There is a happy medium.
